Golden Millet (Milium Effusum) - If you want to add a fresh idea to your landscape, then consider this colorful little grass for the shade garden. Foliage is bright yellow in spring, and turns greenish gold in summer and only grows to about 18 - 24 inches tall. One of the very few dwarf ornamental grasses available. Golden millet prefers to be grown in cool, moist conditions. It is easy to grow from millet seed and will even frequently self-sow which is needed as the main clump can die out after a few years. Therefore, every few years remove the dead foliage and replace with the plants that are product from it self-seeding. Most ornamental grasses full sun, but this grass is the exception to the rule as it actually prefers shade. The bonus is that the delicate chartreuse leaves will brighten a shady corner in any garden.
